REMEMBER…

When choosing a photo to be used for a caricature, try to keep in mind that the artist doing the drawing has probably never seen this person before. The ONLY thing the artist has to go by is your photo! So make sure it's a good one.

HERE’S WHAT I NEED

SIZE:

Regardless of the size of the entire photo, the size of the subject’s head should be at least ONE INCH in diameter (about the size of a quarter (USD)). This will make it easier for the artist to see what the subject looks like.

LIGHTING:

Please try to choose photos with adequate lighting. Too many shadows on the face can either alter the look of the facial features or hide them altogether. Also, try to make sure the shape of the hair easy to distinguish from the background.

CLARITY:

Please be certain your photo is clear – not too blurry or too grainy. The artist will need to see enough detail in the face in order to achieve an accurate likeness.

CROPPING:

If possible, please try to avoid photos that “cut off” certain features like ears and hair. This will make it easier for the artist to literally see “the whole picture.”

OTHER TIPS:

  • Make sure your photo is as current as possible, taking into account even the slightest change in appearance. Of course, if you WANT to have the subject drawn at an earlier age (for example, on their wedding day, or when they were a baby), then an older photo is appropriate.
  • A person’s hairstyle defines an individual just as much as the face does. Try to make certain the photo you choose depicts your subject in his or her most typical and/or current hairstyle.
  • Make sure your photo reflects a subject’s typical facial expression, as the artist can only draw whatever expression is in the photo.
  • A smile, a smirk, or a raised eyebrow usually makes for a better caricature than a blank, non-expressive face.
  • Plan ahead. If the drawing is to be a gift to be delivered by a specific date (like Christmas Day or somebody’s birthday), please take the time necessary to search for good photos. Remember to include turnaround time for the finished artwork.
  • It is very difficult for an artist to “add” or “delete” certain items. Things like hats, glasses and heavy stubble are integral components of a subject’s likeness.
  • Please try to choose photos that portray the subject in an ordinary, everyday manner. This will help the drawing to be instantly recognizable.
  • Finally, multiple photos of a subject, while not necessary, can be helpful in determining what the person looks like from different angles.
